1+10-Digit Dialing Required For All Local Calls
All California residents in the 209 area code will need to dial 1+ 10-digits (area code + phone number) for all local calls. The reason for this change is to enable the forthcoming 3-digit “988” National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The FCC is working to have this 3-digit dialing code available July 2022.
As of October 24, 2021, dialing 7-digits for local calls will be prohibited. Calls will not go through and you will be asked to hang up and dial 1+ 10-digits to complete the call.
Why are we telling you this now?
1) The transition to 10-digit dialing has already begun—and we want you to be ready.
2) This change affects more than just your landline and/or mobile phone; it also affects equipment that is programmed to complete local calls using only 7-digit numbers, for example:
• life safety systems or medical monitoring devices
• PBXs
• fax machines
• propane dialers
• fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates
• speed dialers
• call forwarding settings
• voicemail services
3) To give you time to update materials that include your personal or business phone number, such as:
• website
• stationery
• social media sites
• advertising materials
• personal and business checks
• personal or pet ID tags
